Dear friends and colleagues,

Since a few years, the ESID summer school has gone annually.  This year’s session should have taken place in May in Greece. We planned to experience as a new feature a shared session open also to local doctors and organised this with the help of Maria Kanariou, a long-standing member of the Greek ESID community. Out of 51 highly qualified applicants from 28 countries across the world, the faculty had the difficult task to select 31 candidates.

Unfortunately the Covid-19 pandemic did not allow us to proceed, and as you can imagine we sadly had to cancel this live event. We decided not to go virtual as this would have largely reduced the benefits of this interactive educational experience.  As it was uncertain to make this event happen in 2020, we took the decision to skip this year’s summer school.  Hopefully, we can have a face-to-face educational school next year in Greece with the same format. This means also, that new candidates won’t be able to apply for the 2021 Summer School, as the candidates have already been chosen. We will try to propose other kinds of interactive educational activities in 2021 as a substitute.

In April the Educational Working Party was able to award 2 medium-term and 1 short-term fellowship. I would like to mention also that some of the awarded fellowships from 2019/2020 had to be postponed due to Covid-19 to start later this year or even next year. Naturally, ESID was happy to support these requests in order to allow the candidates to experience their fellowships in the best sanitary conditions.

Last, but not least, there will be the Educational Day at the upcoming ESID Congress on Wednesday, October 14th. I hope that many of you will be able to take part in this online event. We’ll do our best to make the sessions as lively as possible in this unusual format.

I wish all of you a beautiful summer season and I hope that you will be able to relax and take profit of your vacation despite travel restrictions.

Best wishes,

Despina
