Dear friends and dear members,

The summer holidays are just around the corner. The next ESID meeting in Lisbon is approaching and the anticipation of the meeting is growing with each passing day.

We are currently working on finalizing the next interactive case in the online educational portal. I don't want to give too much away, but I hope it will generate a lot of interest for the users. It should be available for ESID members at the beginning of the ESID meeting in Lisbon. Another interactive case is being developed.

I was alerted to an initiative by Laia Alsina from Barcelona. The aim is to identify complex PID patients in advance that might guide us, clinicians, as well as nurses in the upcoming care. Patient parameters as well as clinical parameters should help us to identify in advance complex PID patients that might need more support in the care. The aim is to recognize negative outcome parameters of complex PID patients before complications occur. The initiative is at the beginning. Every input is welcome.

My term of office is drawing to a close. It was a great honor and a great joy for me to have served our society. In the course of time, new friends and acquaintances have been made. ESID lives from the generosity of its members and their willingness to commit themselves to the common good. Without this support our organization would not be what it is today. It is my concern that my successor also acts in this spirit and fights hand in hand with our allies INGID and IPOPI for an improvement of the care of PID patients. ERN-RITA creates a new component with a pan-European dimension.

If we want achieve something, we have not only to look at specific regions, all regions must be taken into account. It must be prevented under all circumstances that a two-tier society is regarded as courant normal in Europe. If, in the future, only specific regions are taken into account for development and financial support, this can lead to envy and resentment. That is why we must not lose sight of the real objective. Therefore, education, training and care for PID must be harmonized at Paneruopean level.

Your contributions, ideas and suggestions influence our society. Do not forget ESID is made up of your input! ESID members are all invited for contributions and ideas.

Best,
Peter Jandus, MD
